Nora Goes Off Script by Annabel Monaghan
“Saturdays at my house kind of feel like a riddle to be solved. I’ve got to get a wolf, a sheep, and a chicken across the river, and everyone must survive. Our variables are soccer, baseball, dance, and playdates. Participants must be fed and hydrated, with multiple costume changes that take place in the car.”
Nora Hamilton is a script writer for television romance movies…she follows a formula, changes a few elements, and sells her scripts. Then her husband, Ben, left and she went off script and wrote a big-screen movie about her experience. The producer even decides to film some key scenes on her property which gives her just enough money to pay off her debts. When the crews roll in, Nora’s life goes off kilter.
As she tries to keep life as normal as possible for her two kids, Leo Vance, the star of the movie, lives in a trailer on her property. He keeps showing up on her porch for the spectacular sunrises she usually watches alone and when the crew leaves, he asks to pay her to stay for an extra week. She needs the money, so she says “yes.” By the end of the week, her heart is involved and she is hoping Leo doesn’t break it.
I really enjoyed this rom-com of a book. While it has some of the formulaic elements of a typical rom-com, I loved Nora’s kids and her life as a single parent who is trying to hold everything together through a carefully constructed schedule (this appealed to my Type-A nature!). It made everything feel more real. The relationship between Leo and Nora’s two children was also a special element in this story.
If you enjoy a great rom-com, I highly recommend this book!
