Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney
“My husband doesn’t recognize my face.”
This first line of Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney sucks you in and the story doesn’t let you go, even after the final page. Adam and Amelia Wright, along with their dog, Bob, drive from London to a remote, renovated chapel in Scotland during a snowstorm. Amelia won the trip through a work raffle and the timing seemed perfect. Their marriage counselor suggested a weekend away, although Adam, a screenwriter, makes it clear he does not want to go on the trip. Once they arrive at the chapel, power outages, noises, a face in the window and other events make it clear this weekend was not a random prize.
The story is told from the perspectives of Amelia, Adam and a third person, Robin. There are also letters throughout written on each wedding anniversary. The letters are written to Adam, but they are not intended to ever be delivered.
This is ALL I am going to tell you about the plot of this book. Y’all know by now I am a sucker for an atmospheric setting and this most definitely checks that box. There are a number of, “Wait, What?!” moments in the book that still have me processing. This was one of the best suspense stories I have read in quite a while!
