Thin Ice by Paige Shelton
Bestselling author Beth Rivers leaves the hospital after being abducted by a stalker and escapes to a remote town in Alaska. Beth’s abductor has not been found and Alaska seems like a good place to go to heal – mentally and physically. While the police and Beth’s mother search for the captor, she checks into the room she booked from the hospital. She accidentally booked a room in a half-way house where three women are currently under the supervision of Viola, the landlord.
As Beth adapts to the remote Alaskan small-town, where Wi-Fi and cell service are hard to find, the town is reeling from the death of a local woman. Her husband goes missing after reporting the death and the town’s police chief looks into the case. Beth finds herself getting involved because the police chief asked her to run the local (one-person operation) newspaper.
This is the first book in a series and I enjoyed the mystery and set-up to more books in the series. The characters in the town are all intriguing from the start and I know we will learn more about them as the series progresses. The remote Alaska setting with the isolation from “society” makes for a good suspense setting. This book falls somewhere between cozy mystery and suspense/thriller which I found to be a good balance. It wasn’t too fluffy, but also did not make me fear bumps in the night.
I really liked this first book in the Alaska Wild series by Paige Shelton and will definitely be reading the next (Cold Wind)!
