The Nanny by Gilly Macmillan
Slow burning thriller with a creepy country-side manor in England…need I say more? Honestly, this book checked all the boxes for my favorite elements in a suspense story. In case you actually want a description of the story though and my elements list isn’t sufficient to get you interested, read on…
Lord and Lady Holt, their seven-year-old daughter Jocelyn, Nanny Hannah and various other staff live on a manor estate with a lovely pond and gardens outside of London. Jo’s bonds with her mother are tenuous at best, but Nanny Hannah is her world. One morning, Jo wakes to find Nanny Hannah has vanished. All of her items are gone and her parents tell her she left without notice. Thirty years later, Jo and her daughter, Ruby, move back to the manor to live with Lady Holt. Jo’s relationship with her mother is no better than it was as a child and tensions are high between the two.
One day, shortly after Jo and Ruby move in, there’s a knock at the door. Nanny Hannah is back. Or is she? What happened all those years ago? There are so many secrets held by the characters in this story and it is definitely a slow burn to reveal all of them. It was so worth the pacing though as it kept me guessing and kept my heart pounding. This story is revealed through multiple point of views which added to the intrigue. I highly recommend this book and will be reading more by Gilly Macmillan!
