Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella
This was the first book I read by Sophie Kinsella and I read it shortly after it was published in 2009 – it is still my favorite book by her. It is truly laugh out loud hilarious! The Shopaholic books got on my nerves because I did not dig the protagonist. However, the sparring between the two main characters in this novel is on point comedy!
Lara Lington’s imagination is in overdrive – or is it? The twenty-something is visited by the spirit of her great-aunt Sadie who is obsessed with all things 1920s. Sadie has a last request: she wants Lara to find a necklace she had for seventy-five years. She says she will not rest until she knows where it is. Poor Lara is struggling to keep her company running in the absence of her business partner, but Sadie doesn’t care and will haunt her until she finds the necklace.
The interactions between the two “twenties” girls are truly laugh out loud hilarious! Sadie pops up all over the place and makes Lara’s life extremely complicated as no one else sees or hears her and Lara struggles to act normal in the midst of her great-aunt’s nuttiness. I really can’t express without giving too much away why I loved the interactions between these two so much! Most Sophie Kinsella books focus on the romantic relationships. This one has romance, but focuses much more on family dynamics.
I don’t know about you, but I am looking for comedy these days…this definitely fits the bill and adds some sweetness, romance and the Roaring Twenties too!
