Louise Penny- All The Devils are Here
Armand Gamache and his wife are visiting their very pregnant daughter in Paris where she has moved with her husband Jean-Guy. While there, Gamache’s godfather, Stephen, is hit by a car which turns out to not be an accident. This event sets off a chain reaction that reveals secrets Stephen had unearthed. Secrets that if revealed, could topple a global company and its powerful allies. Gamache and Jean-Guy are thrown into investigating not only Stephen’s attempted murder, but the murder of a stranger and a plot that cost the lives of many people all over the world.
I have read Louise Penny’s whole series and she is in top form here. I was not a fan of her previous novel, “A Better Man,” but in this book she returns to what makes her writing shine. Penny excels when her characters are given cases having to do with conspiracies and corruption. Gamache and Jean-Guy working together to figure out who the bad guys are, is what keeps the reader turning the pages. I especially liked learning about different attractions in Paris as the characters traveled through the city. It brought France to life and you could almost smell the fresh baguettes and see the glittering lights of the Eiffel Tower. While “Kingdom of the Blind” ended the main plot at the Sûrerté du Québec, I hope that Penny is able to create another strong plotline to carry Gamache into future books. I know I sure will be reading them!
