The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary
I went into this quirky British romance expecting a fluffy read. That’s not at all what I got (don’t worry – it’s not too heavy!) and I was not disappointed in the least. When the story begins, Tiffy needs a place to live and Leon is looking for a roommate. Tiffy sees the apartment listing for an unusual situation – it’s only a one bedroom with one bed, but they will never see each other. This is because Leon works nights and Tiffy works during the day.
They enter into the unusual arrangement. Tiffy and Leon interact through ordinary notes left to each other throughout the apartment. As the story goes and the notes are longer and more frequent, much to their surprise, their lives start intertwining. Both characters are dealing with some difficult situations in life, but they help each other through them.
I loved the two voices (Tiffy and Leon) that narrate the story through the text and through their notes. I know a couple of people who read this and had a tough time with Leon’s voice in the beginning (getting adjusted to the way he speaks/writes), but I found both characters charming. I really loved this story for its characters. I highly recommend it to readers of British tales and readers of romance.
