The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels by Janice Hallett
“But just because someone is a born leader, doesn’t mean you should follow them.”
True crime writer Amanda Bailey has been commissioned to write a book about the Alperton Angels. In the early 2000s, the Alperton Angels were a small cult led by Gabriel, who claimed to be the archangel. The group ended when some of the members died (suicide or murder?) and Gabriel was put in jail. Amanda’s angle is to find the baby from the cult who would have just turned 18 and get an exclusive interview. As she investigates and makes numerous contacts, things don’t quite go as expected and Amanda begins to wonder just what happened during the fateful night she is researching.
This story is told through emails, WhatsApp messages, interview transcriptions, extracts from scripts and other mixed media. While the structure and story required some concentration to keep characters straight, it was a compelling story with surprisingly strong character development revealed through the mixed media. I loved the back and forth exchanges between Amanda and her transcriber, Ellie. There were many twists and turns throughout that surprised me and kept me guessing and riveted until the very end.
If you enjoy true crime or mixed media novels, I highly recommend this book!
