The Spectacular by Fiona Davis

Fiona Davis’s historical fiction novels center around a building in New York City and her latest, about Radio City Music Hall and the Rockettes, is a fantastic addition to her collection.

Marion lives in New York City in the 1950s with her father and sister. They do not understand her passion for dance and her father wants her to marry a man he has selected as a suitable choice for her to settle down and start a family. Instead, Marion decides to try out for the Rockettes. As she defies her father and begins her dancing career, the “Big Apple Bomber” is continuing to terrorize the city. When Marion is personally affected by the bomber, she urges the police to try a radical new way of investigating by way of psychological profiling. Will she be able to help the police catch this elusive bomber?

This story had so many interesting elements of history including the Rockettes, Radio City Music Hall, psychology, and policing techniques. I loved Marion’s story and was rooting for her as she tried to find her own way in a world that wanted her to follow the guidance of the men in her life. Fiona Davis has not failed me yet! I have loved learning the history of New York City through her novels.
