All That Is Mine I Carry with Me by William Landay
It’s been ten years since William Landay’s bestselling Defending Jacob was published. TEN years! I have been anxiously waiting, periodically googling, checking his website, HOPING I would see he is releasing a new book. He finally did! I have now read it and still believe Landay is a masterful storyteller. This is equal parts crime novel, family drama, domestic thriller and literary fiction.
As the book opens, an author, Phil, is telling the reader about a meeting he has with an old friend, Jeff, from school. Jeff requested a meeting because he and his sister, Miranda, would like Phil to write a book about their mother. Jane Larkin went missing forty years ago and answers have never been found. No one knows exactly what happened to her and they would like Phil to do some research, ask questions and maybe help them uncover the truth.
I don’t want to tell you much more about this story because it was better to go in blind. The story is broken into four “books” which are each mostly from a different character’s POV. The structure of the book, in another author’s hands, would have been a struggle (four books/chapters, no quotation marks in most of the book) but with Landay penning the story, it all worked. Don’t go into this one expecting a fast-paced thriller, it’s definitely a slow-burn, character driven story, but it was all done expertly.
I highly recommend All That is Mine I Carry with Me by Willian Landay!
