How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix
“These are our parents!” Louise shouted, the first time she’d shouted at an adult maybe ever. “They’re not a doughnut! You don’t split them in half.”
One of the best things to come out of the 1980s…campy horror films. Crazy, creepy, weird, gasp-inducing moments…they have everything I love in a horror film. Grady Hendrix has taken everything fabulous about an 80s horror film and written it into a deliciously campy and creepy novel: How to Sell a Haunted House.
It’s best not to know much going into this one, so basic plot is all you need…
Louise is from Charleston, but left home as soon as she could and lives in L.A. with her daughter. She and her brother, Mark, do not talk. They have nothing in common and Mark lives near his parents, bartends after dropping out of college and seems to mooch off her parents. When Louise’s phone rings and it is Mark, she knows something big has happened. Mark has called to tell Louise both of their parents died in a tragic accident. Louise travels to Charleston for the funeral, reading of the wills and to help clear out her parents’ house.
Unfortunately, her parents’ house will be no easy project to tackle. Their mother grew up in the house, so there is no shortage of stuff to be removed. Oh, and did I mention her mother was a puppeteer who made and has hundreds of puppets and dolls? Yes…puppets and dolls. A horror story with puppets, dolls, dead parents…seriously…buckle in and get ready. If you like 80s horror, you will not be disappointed.
