The Love of My Life by Rosie Walsh
“But there was always a negative space, a shadow on the sand. That is the way with loss: you can’t undo it, no matter what you have gained.”
Emma and Leo have been together for ten years and have a young daughter named Ruby. Emma is finishing treatments for cancer and they all are anxious to move on from this health crisis. Leo is an obituary writer and Emma is a marine biologist. As he copes with her health situation, he decides to do what he does best, research her life. As he does, he finds everything he thought he knew about his wife was a lie.
This was an interesting book because it was part domestic thriller and part contemporary fiction. The publisher’s summary led me to think it was going to be a domestic thriller, but the elements of contemporary fiction made it a deeper book with some truly heart-breaking elements. I also loved the settings of London and the Northumberland beaches.
This is a hard book to talk about because so much of it needs to be revealed slowly through the narration. I will leave you with this: It started a bit slow, and was a slow-burn, but I really enjoyed this story and the characters and felt for them completely. I was guessing throughout about what Emma’s story was and loved following Leo’s exploration into her past. I am now diving into Walsh’s previous novel, Ghosted!
