Gilt by Jamie Brenner
Pavlin & Company is a family owned fine jewelry business (think Tiffany & Company) whose brilliant marketing campaign made diamonds the must-have jewel for engagement rings. The family was torn apart by a more recent marketing campaign that promised the Electric Rose to the first of three Pavlin sisters to become engaged. Now, nearly twenty years later, Gemma Maybrook, daughter of the deceased winner of the precious prize, has spent the past decade apart from the Pavlin family. Gemma is graduating from New York School of Design with jewelry design ambitions of her own. First, she wants the ring that belonged to her mother. That will involve talking to her mother’s sisters for the first time in many years.
The story is set in New York City and Cape Cod and made for a perfect summer read. The family relationships, past and present, explored in this book were a highlight of the story. I actually enjoyed the jewelry aspects too as the company was a significant part of the story, but it never overshadowed the plot. This was my first by Jamie Brenner, but if you’re looking for the perfect beach read as we march through August, look no further than Gilt!
