The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley
Bienvenue à Paris! Jess has fled her job and home country to stay with her half-brother, Ben, in his Paris apartment. Ben was less than ecstatic when she asked to stay with him, but agreed and left a voicemail for her with details. Unfortunately, the message cut off before some important information and when she arrives, Ben is nowhere to be found. He isn’t answering his phone and, after she picks the lock to his apartment, she realizes he is missing. All of his belongings seem to be in his apartment, but there is no sign of Ben.
As Jess begins to investigate, she meets Ben’s neighbors from the other apartments in the building. They are all wealthy and the apartments are impressive – and in a quiet, historic district. How could Ben afford to live there? And who are these neighbors? What secrets do they hold?
This is another win by Lucy Foley! It was different from her last two (The Hunting Party and The Guest List) which were both locked room, atmospheric mysteries. This book was still atmospheric, but it wasn’t nature that felt like a character this time around – it was the apartment building. While most of the action takes place in the building, there are also a number of scenes on the streets of Paris, so there are more characters and places in this novel than a locked room setting. The chapters were brief and in multiple points of view, which kept the story moving quickly. Secrets clearly abound and the reader is never sure who is lying and who is trustworthy.
I highly recommend this new suspense novel by Lucy Foley!
