The Therapist by B. A. Paris
I finally read the latest B. A. Paris psychological thriller (it came out way back in July!) and I felt right at home. I had a hard time with Paris’s last book (The Dilemma), but decided to read this one after a number of folks (thanks, all!) recommended it to me. It was classic B. A. Paris! For me, it was on par with Behind Closed Doors, which was my favorite of hers to-date.
The book opens just as Alice and Leo have moved into a gated London community called The Circle. Alice moved from a small rural cottage and Leo left a small London apartment. They had a long-distance relationship and decided it was time to go to the next stage. The house had been empty for a year and they got it for a terrific price. When they move in, Alice jumps into meeting neighbors and setting up gatherings, but Leo is more distant.
As Alice gets to know her new neighbors, she finds that secrets abound in this closed community, including a secret about her house. Alice dives deeper into understanding the history of her house and its former owners. As she does, she questions and suspects everyone around her, including Leo. As Alice suspects everyone, we, the readers, do too. By the end, we have suspected basically every character at some point! This makes for quite the psychologically twisty tale!
This was a quick and engrossing read. Alice frustrated me a bit with her over-the-top reactions to some things and underwhelming reactions to others. However, it was not enough to take away from the suspense I experienced as I read and I was turning pages rapidly to get to the conclusion!
