The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling
“Never mix vodka and witchcraft.”
I love a good opening sentence and by Jove, if that one doesn’t make you laugh and want more, this isn’t the book for you. It was exactly what I was wanting for a spooky season romantic comedy and Erin Sterling (pseudonym of Rachel Hawkins) totally delivered! A GoodReads reviewer said “This book is like Hocus Pocus meets The Witches of Eastwick meets a grown-up Harry Potter” and I can’t think of a better descriptor than that.
As the book opens, Rhys, a Welsh witch, has just broken the heart of nineteen-year-old Vivienne. Vivi and her cousin, Gwyn, decide to play at cursing Rhys…what they don’t realize for nearly ten years, is the curse worked.
Fast-forward and Rhys is coming back to the small college town where Vivi lives and works. He has a quick trip planned to renew the town’s magic (his ancestor founded the magical community) and nothing goes as planned. Rhys and Vivi realize the curse is wreaking all sorts of havoc and they must find a way to break it before it is too late for the town.
This was such a fun read with undeniable chemistry between Rhys and Vivi. I loved this story and hope Erin Sterling returns with another featuring these characters and this town. If you’re looking for a Halloween read with witchy vibes, romance and very little suspense, look no further!
