How to Walk Away by Katherine Center
Maggie’s life is exactly where she wants it to be. She is about to start the job of her dreams. She is dating the perfect guy. Her perfect guy, Chip, plans what he thinks is a romantic day…he is a NEARLY licensed pilot and has plans to take her up in a private plane. Maggie has reservations about flying, but Chip talks her into it. The flight is his grand romantic gesture that will lead to engagement. But, everything goes horribly wrong.
Chip walks away with barely a scratch. Maggie wakes in the hospital where she gradually learns just how extensive her injuries are. Her family, including her estranged sister, enters the picture as Maggie begins her long and emotional road to recovery and acceptance. Maggie’s family dynamics were humorous and heartwarming. As she embarks on physical therapy with her surly therapist, she also has to deal with Chip and his mother and their feelings of guilt.
I loved Maggie’s character and thought she seemed authentic as she coped with her situation, worked toward emotional acceptance and struggled through physical therapy. Relationships were a strength of the story too – Maggie’s situation revealed much about who was there for her and who was not. My favorite relationships were between Maggie and her sister, Kit, and Maggie and her physical therapist. Both characters were quirky and prickly and made for fun reading.
If you like Jennifer Weiner or Emily Giffin or enjoy stories that focus on family dynamics with some romance in the mix, I recommend this book! I really enjoyed it and found it to be a quick, fun read.
