“Every house has a story. Ours is a ghost story. It’s also a lie. And now that yet another person has died within these walls, it’s finally time to tell the truth.”
Whether you love Riley Sager or never heard his name, if you are a fan of suspense, please read Home Before Dark which just released on June 30. During this season of summer, this book took me back to my days sitting around a campfire listening to tales of the spooky and paranormal.
This story begins as Maggie Holt returns to the house her father’s horror memoir made famous. Maggie was five when the family fled and does not remember any of their time at Baneberry Hall. Her life since the publication of the book has been colored by her father’s story and Maggie refuses to believe it is true. Surely she would remember if it was…
Maggie returns to Baneberry Hall as a professional restorer of old houses wanting to restore and sell the house that changed her life. She is determined to discover what happened in the house that caused her family to leave and why her parents refused to talk about it. Is there any truth to the infamous book her father wrote?
I loved this book because it includes a book within a book. Maggie’s present day story is set against pages from her dad’s best-selling horror memoir, House of Horrors. What is true and what is fiction? Maggie’s story alongside her dad’s makes the reader wonder what really happened at Baneberry Hall for Maggie’s family and all the others in the long line of sad and horrific tales from inside this tainted house.
I have love all of Riley Sager’s books, but this might just be my favorite. I was trying to figure out what was really happening at Baneberry Hall right up to the end! This was a terrific goosebumps inflicting read! Reserve it at the Library (https://catalog.lclibs.org/polaris/search/title.aspx…) or through the eLibrary (https://lclibs.overdrive.com/media/5042717).
