Her Dark Lies by J. T. Ellison
Isle Isola, a private island off the coast of Italy, and its historic clifftop grand villa should be the ideal location for a wedding. The villa is owned by the wealthy Compton family. Jack Compton is marrying up-and-coming artist, Claire Hunter in an exclusive ceremony.
As the couple docks on the island, a storm is rolling in. Storms are only the first of much larger obstacles to come. Skeletal remains have just been found on the island. An intruder was stopped in Claire’s home days before they left for Isle Isola which ended with the intruder being shot. Now, on the island, the wedding dress has been ruined, threatening texts are being received and there is always the mystery surrounding the death of Jack’s first wife to add to the clouds over the wedding. As the bodies start piling up (literally in the family’s underground tombs), Claire wonders who is out to ruin the wedding? Should she heed the threats and call it off?
This was a really fun and different type of atmospheric thriller. Short chapters from the perspective of the antagonist are scattered throughout the book, revealing the perpetrator fairly early in the story. However, there are many questions that loom as the book progresses and we are left wondering exactly what is happening until the very end.
I really enjoyed this fast-paced suspense and recommend it to readers who enjoyed Lucy Foley’s The Guest List!
