An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen
Jessica Farris is a twenty-eight-year-old make-up artist who travels to her clients’ residence or place of employment. She is on her last job of the day and is “in the zone” as she works on completing make-up for two young women going out for the night. Then, one of the girls plays a voicemail message:
“This is Ben Quick, Dr. Shields’s assistant. I’m confirming your appointments this weekend, for tomorrow and Sunday from eight to ten a.m. The location again is Hunter Hall, Room 214. I’ll meet you in the lobby and take you up.”
Her client tells the other woman she is going to blow off the appointment. Jessica could really use the money and decides to secretly go in the woman’s place. She has no idea her life will be forever changed as a result.
When she arrives for the appointment, she is placed in a sterile room holding one laptop. She sits at the laptop and begins a question and answer session with ethics and morality questions. She is instructed to answer each honestly. To the surprise of herself and Dr. Shields, she is honest. Dr. Shields asks her to become a more involved subject in the study with more required of her and much more money to be made. Jessica agrees.
Thus begins her sessions with Dr. Shields, assignments that become stranger and more twisted and Jessica begins to wonder if it is her imagination or if something sinister is happening.
This story is told in alternating chapters from Dr. Shields’s and Jessica’s perspectives. I loved reading both of their POVs as it made everything a bit creepier and more intense. The ethics and morality study made for an interesting element that contributed to the level of suspense maintained throughout. I really enjoyed this suspense novel and highly recommend it!
